LIVING WITH AUNTY GRACE
EPISODE 7:
My encounter with Tobe left me unsettled. He had insisted on walking me back into the library and sat with me while we read till the bell rang signifying the end of the school day.
Elohor was standing at the gate waiting for me when I had finally parted ways with Tobe.
"Nse I'm sorry. I don't know what got into me. I guess I'm on edge"
She said quietly.
"It's okay. I forgive you. And yes, I'll go for the party."
Elohor screamed and hugged me.
"Oh I love you! You're the best friend ever!"
I chuckled and hugged her back. We both walked to the bus stop together.
Aunty grace wasn't at home when I got in. Uncle kunle was watching his favourite program again. I greeted him and marched into my room.
I have to be careful about him, I looked towards the door and ran to bolt it.
"How was school today?" Aunty grace asked later that evening during dinner.
"It was okay. I got this new history book from the library and it's really interesting. It's almost as if I can see the incidents happening"
"Wow" uncle kunle said laughing "you have a very active imagination then"
I smiled at him to weary to do anything else.
"Uhmmm.. Aunty grace, one of my class mate is having a birthday party, may I be allowed to attend?"
The silence in the room left knots in my stomach.
And then Uncle kunle started laughing again, but louder this time. Genuine laughter.
"Oh Nse, if you could see your face.. And you had to ask so politely"
He smiled and touched my cheek from accross the table.
"Of course you can go"
I was frozen to the spot as soon as his hand grazed my cheek. I didn't want to risk a glance at aunty grace, because I already felt the hostility her eyes darted at me.
"You don't mind, do you grace?" Uncle kunle asked, purposely ignoring the razor sharp gaze aunty grace sent his way. He quirked his eyebrows at her and she quickly smiled.
"Of course not" she hastingly reassured him.
"You're free to go. Just make sure your phone is on, so I can check in on you from time to time."
It was at moments such as this that I appreciated uncle kunle's presence in the house.
"Thank you so much" I muttered, with my head bowed to hide my smile.
April, 2017
Elohor and I became the hottest girls in class. Everyone wanted us to attend their parties. Tobe on the other hand tried as much as possible to spend time with me.
Exams had come and gone again and it was Easter break.
"Babe, are you travelling home for Easter?" Elohor asked a week after school had vacated.
"I don't know Sha, I haven't really thought about it" I replied. I had been having so much fun these past few weeks that I had only thought about here and now, not about the future.
"Maybe you should stay. Tell your aunty that you want to stay, we both know she won't argue" Elohor replied.
"I don't know.. I guess papa would be expecting me. And I've missed my brother so much"
I said. I felt sad - not because of my family's absence, but because I hadn't even given them a thought ever since my partying spree began.
"What about Tobe?" Elohor inquired
"So what about him?" I shrugged. "He can survive a couple of days without me"
Elohor likes bringing up Tobe whenever she wants to cajole me, I thought.
"If you say so. He's your crush anyway"
She stood up and left the room.
I wonder what her problem is
